Southern Apennines (SA) extensional tectonics is poorly defined compared to the Central-Northern region, despite higher geodetic deformation and intensity/magnitude of historical and instrumental seismicity. This project addresses these critical knowledge gaps and poorly defined seismic gaps in the Campania-Lucania sector (between the Alburni Mountains and the Val d’Agri basin). Using a multidisciplinary approach, the study integrates surface structural analysis, regional geotraverses, seismic reflection profiles, and 3D-models to map and characterize Quaternary extensional structures. A better definition of extensional structures could lead to a significant revision of the geometric relationships between the stacked compressive units in the chain, which are a matter of debate. Once the entire extensional system has been geometrically and kinematically characterized, a broader objective is to compare the studied extensional system with others in the Northern Apennines (NA), to understand whether structural models of SA and NA are comparable and consistent (or not) on the geodynamic scale.
