Title of the PhD project:
Investigating active fault segmentation in compressional and extensional environments. Examples from the Southern Alps and Central Apennines (Italy) This project investigates active fault segmentation through the hierarchisation of tectonic elements, aiming to define the surface length of deep seismogenic sources capable of generating high-magnitude earthquakes (MW>6), a key parameter in seismic hazard assessment. The research focuses on case studies from the two main tectonic settings currently active in Italy: the compressional regime along the eastern South Alpine front and the extensional regime of the Central Apennines. A multidisciplinary neotectonic approach integrates geological, structural, morphostratigraphic, aerial photograph interpretation, palaeoseismological, and geochronological investigations. These data will be used to reconstruct the morphostratigraphic and chronostratigraphic frameworks of the study areas and to constrain the spatial and temporal evolution of tectonic deformation. Geological investigations will be complemented by geophysical data acquisition and interpretation, including the analysis of seismicity, reflection seismic profile, electrical tomography, ambient seismic noise, magnetotelluric, and audio-magnetotelluric surveys.
