My research provides an integrated bio-geomorphological investigation of the 127 km Abruzzo coast to quantify erosion driven by climate change and human impact. Developed within the framework of the ARENA project, the study couples multi-decadal remote sensing with extensive field-based methodologies directly geared toward producing the Atlas of Abruzzo Beaches. The approach combines detailed geomorphological surveys, sediment and seawater sampling, and the analysis of active beach processes to characterize coastal dynamics, sediment availability and hydrodynamic forcing across sandy plains, dune systems and soft-rock cliffs. These empirical field investigations are integrated with GIS (Geographic Information System) based methods to analyse and quantify retreat and accretion across the Abruzzo coastal sector. Bridging field surveys with spatial modelling, this comprehensive baseline delivers actionable operational tools for regional policymakers to prioritize sustainable coastal management and climate adaptation strategies.
