CAPORALE GAIA
My PhD project investigates the relationships between seismicity, crustal structure, and seismic attenuation in Southern Italy, with particular focus on the Calabrian Arc, one of the most seismotectonically complex regions of the Mediterranean. The project combines multi-parameter seismic attenuation tomography, based on the analysis of Peak Delay (PD), total attenuation (Q), and scattering attenuation (Qc), with historical and instrumental seismicity to investigate crustal heterogeneities and their relationship with the regional tectonic setting. Teleseismic Receiver Functions provide complementary constraints on crustal structure and discontinuities, allowing attenuation patterns to be interpreted within a broader structural framework. By integrating different seismological observations and modelling approaches, the project aims to improve our understanding of the processes controlling seismicity and crustal deformation in Southern Italy. The final stage of the PhD will extend this multidisciplinary framework to tsunami modelling, with particular attention to the 1905 Calabria earthquake and associated tsunami.
